The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that the team will be moving its training facility to the Toronto suburb of Vaughan.
The team has been trying to move to Vaughan since the 2017-18 season, but has struggled to find a suitable site.
The team’s new facility will be situated at the end of the Finch Street corridor and is scheduled to open in 2018.
The move will provide the team with more space to play and train, as well as improve the team’s practice facilities.
According to Toronto Star reporter David Mims, the team will move the facility to a location closer to the new hockey stadium, where the team has a lease that expires in 2021.
The Maple Leafs will have an open practice space, as they are in the middle of the NHL’s expansion draft.
The Leafs are expected to make a final decision on a site in the coming weeks, but Mims added that it appears the team is planning to move the practice facility to Vaughan.
“I think they will take a closer look at the new site than they have in the past,” he said.
“I think that’s where the site is now.”
The Leafs have had several opportunities to move in recent years, but the team never moved into Vaughan, as the area was a major transit hub for Toronto’s growing downtown.
A decision on the future of the Maple Leafs training facility is expected to be made in the near future.
